Garrett Buller

Garrett Buller holds a Bachelor of Music from Baylor University, where he studied Double Bass and was in the prestigious Baylor Symphony Orchestra. As a member in various ensembles, Garrett has performed at the Texas Music Teachers Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas, and at Carnegie Hall in New York City. With years of teaching experience, he has worked in various settings, including private string and piano instruction, elementary school music, and directing a middle school string orchestra. 

As a teacher, Garrett emphasizes critical thinking and developing an understanding of musical and technical concepts. Rather than simply imitating or following instructions, students are encouraged to explore why a particular form, technique, or method is effective, fostering both independence and mastery. Garrett also emphasizes an appreciation of all music, and believes that exploring a variety of styles and discovering what speaks to them will help each student develop their unique musical voice.

Originally from Texas, Garrett is new to the Boston area and excited to be here! He lives in the North End with his wife, Samantha, and their dog, Waffle.

Favorite Music to Perform- Romantic and 20th Century Western Art Music, Jazz, Pop, Folk

Favorite Music to Listen to- There are artists and songs I love from just about any genre, but these days I mostly listen to pop, folk, and indie music, with some of my favorite artists being John Lucas, Gungor, Tow’rs, Lake Street Dive, Wild Rivers, Coldplay, Noah Kahan, and Taylor Swift!

Something most people don’t know about you- I’m almost constantly thinking about the meaning of life and the nature of existence. It’s exhausting, but for some reason I enjoy it!

Other Hobbies & Interests-  Lifelong learning! I spend a lot of time listening to educational podcasts on topics like science, philosophy, religion, anthropology, and psychology. I also love playing video games and finding/cooking new recipes, brewing unique flavors of tea, and eating in general!

Born/Grew Up- I was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and lived in/near there until moving to Boston in 2024.

Hero- My choir director from college, Dr. Randall Bradley. He is my model for the type of leader I strive to be — he has dedicated his life to loving and serving others by creating communities where everyone is seen and loved for who they are and thereby empowered to reach their full potential.

Practice Tips- Practice is mainly only as difficult as you make it. In a practice session, your next goal should always be one that’s easily achievable; if it’s not, then you got ahead of yourself, and you need to make smaller goals and progress in smaller increments. You’re either practicing too fast, too large of a section at once, or trying to solve more than one problem at a time. Even the most complex pieces of music can (and should) be broken down into their smallest, simplest components, and then very slowly pieced back together.
