K-pop, short for Korean popular music, is a global pop culture phenomenon. It incorporates many different styles and genres of music on top of its traditional Korean music roots. It has become a modern hybrid of Western and Asian cultures. K-pop is known for its catchy melodies, precise dance routines, and colorful fashion. It has positively influenced the AAPI community by helping to develop a sense of identity and representation.

AAPI Heritage Month Feature: Nilo Alcala

Nilo Alcala is a Filipino-American composer whose works have been performed around the world. He is the first Philippine-born composer to receive the Copland House Residency Award and is the 2019 The American Prize Winner in Composition. Nilo Alcala is a versatile composer who has written music for film and other visual media. He is passionate about music education and was the composer-mentor for Pasadena Master Chorale’s “Listening to the Future” program from 2016-2019 for promising high school composers.

AAPI Heritage Month Feature: Yo-Yo Ma

Yo-Yo was born in 1955 to Chinese parents living in Paris. He began to study the cello with his father at age four and three years later moved with his family to New York City, where he continued his cello studies at the Juilliard School before pursuing a liberal arts education at Harvard. He has received numerous awards, including the Avery Fisher Prize (1978), the National Medal of the Arts (2001), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2010), Kennedy Center Honors (2011), the Polar Music Prize (2012), and the Birgit Nilsson Prize (2022). He has performed for nine American presidents, most recently on the occasion of President Biden’s inauguration.

In addition to his work as a performing artist, Yo-Yo has partnered with communities and institutions around the world to develop programs that advocate for a future guided by humanity, trust, and understanding.

AAPI Heritage Month Feature: Lili'uokalani

Lili'uokalani ascended to the Hawaiian throne on January 29, 1891 but was forced to abdicate just 4 years later on January 29, 1895. After Hawaii was officially annexed by the United States, Lili'uokalani and her supporters formed the Oni pa'a (Stand Firm) movement and attempted to re-take the islands and return power to Hawaiian royal rule. She was charged with treason and put under house arrest, but was eventually pardoned. She continued to advocate for a free Hawaii until her death in 1917.

Lili'uokalani's most famous song, Aloha Oe (Farewell to Thee) was composed before she became queen and was written in its entirety in one afternoon. The song is about a sorrowful goodbye, a last embrace, and hopes to meet again one day.
