INSTRUCTOR

King Jay is a Boston-based musician, teacher, and artist. Originally from Los Angeles, CA, King graduated cum laude from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music with scholarships in music and opera performance. She earned her Masters in Vocal Performance from the Longy School of Music of Bard College, where she graduated summa cum laude with a focus on new music.
 
King has been immersed in music since the age of five, with a strong focus on voice and piano, alongside guitar, bass guitar, and trumpet. She performs across genres, including classical, jazz, musical theater, and pop, and is particularly passionate about collaborating with composers and performing new and unconventional works.
 
As a teacher, King Jay focuses on establishing foundational skills in a fun and engaging way that encourages a lifelong passion for music. She prioritizes healthy practice and performance techniques for all musicians and encourages students to be expressive and confident artists.

Something most people don’t know about you: I actually have an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science! You wouldn’t think it, but programming and music theory can be very similar…

Other hobbies & interests: I do illustration, graphic design, and fashion design! A lot of my musician friends commission me to design posters and programs for them.

Where you were born & grew up: I was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley area of LA, and later moved out to Long Beach.

Heroes: Francis Poulenc, Elton John, Leonard Bernstein, and Kendrick Lamar 

Practice Tips: Go into your practice with a specific intention, not just the vague idea of “practice.” It makes you so much more productive if you think before you act!
